Prediction of strong adhesion at the MoSi2/Fe interface

We report a spin-polarized periodic density functional theory investigation of the atomic structure, bonding, and ideal work of adhesion of the MoSi2/Fe interface, in order to explore the potential of MoSi2 as a protective coating for steel. We find that MoSi2 strongly adheres to Fe, with an ideal work of adhesion of 3.85 J/m for two low-index, low-strain interfaces. This value will be a lower ...

STRUCTURE, BONDING, AND ADHESION OF MATERIALS INTERFACES WITH DENSITY FUNCTIONAL THEORY: Cr/Fe, SiC/Fe, MoSi2/Ni

SiC/Fe and MoSi2/Ni interfaces are investigated using first principles calculations in order to determine the structure of the interfaces and calculate ideal adhesion energies. As a baseline for comparison, calculations were also performed on the Cr/Fe interface, which shows strong adhesion, even stronger than the intrinsic adhesion of Fe. Both ceramic/metal interfaces show good adhesion. Evide...

Interfacial adhesion of graphene by multiscale models

This article presents a multiscale study on adhesive interactions between graphene and its substrates. First, van der Waals (vdW) interactions between graphene and a SiO2 substrate are studied by fi rst-principle density functional theory (DFT) calculations with dispersion corrections. It is found that the interaction strength is strongly infl uenced by changes of the SiO2 surface structures du...

Interfacial adhesion between graphene and silicon dioxide by density functional theory with van der Waals corrections

Interfacial adhesion between graphene and a SiO2 substrate is studied by density functional theory (DFT) with dispersion corrections. The results demonstrate the van der Waals (vdW) interaction as the predominant mechanism at the graphene/SiO2 interface. It is found that the interaction strength is strongly influenced by changes of the SiO2 surface structures due to surface reactions with water...

First-Principles Studies of Hydrogen Adsorption at Pd-SiO2 Interfaces

The interaction of hydrogen with Pd-SiO2 interfaces has been investigated for the first time using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. The hydrogen-induced polarization at the Pd-SiO2 interfaces was evaluated using Pd-SiO2 interface supercells. As a result, the potential change induced by interfacial hydrogen atoms was not observed even for hydrogen concentration o...
